Rank Advancement:
There are four ranks which can be earned within Sea Scouts; Apprentice, Ordinary, Able and Quarter Master. Quarter Master is the Sea Scout equivalent to the Boy Scouts’ Eagle Scout rank and is a very prestigious accomplishment. The timetable to achieve each rank is roughly as follows:
Apprentice: One full Season
Ordinary: Two full Seasons
Able: Three full seasons
Quarter Master: Varies
ORDINARY RANK OUT OF CLASS Â BOATING SAFETY COURSE:
Every Mariner seeking Ordinary rank should complete a boating safety course.
Note: if you did your Ordinary with the old spiral-bound book you are exempt because it was not a requirement at that time.
Boating Safety Course (Requirement #14): successfully complete a boating safety course approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) offered by one of the following agencies: a state boating agency, the United States Power Squadrons the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary <https://www.cgaux.org/> , or other private or military education courses
It is recommended that you do one of the following two options, which are at no cost to you.
- OPTION ONE (PREFFERED): Boat US free On-Line California Boating Safety Course
- OPTION TWO: CA Department of Boating and Waterways – This is the link to the California Boating Book.
The courses include much material you already know from your manual and Mariner rank classes. However, just as with driver safety courses, knowledge of additional legal requirements pertaining to boating are also important aspects, which are very important to know. The Boating Safety Courses are very informative.
Once you have completed the course, please present your certificate to your classroom instructor to have the requirement signed off. Â Please take the time to complete this requirement.
